"Shaken" is short for "shaken shiyō-shomei," which is the compulsory automobile inspection required for all vehicles in Japan. This inspection is performed annually and ensures that a vehicle is in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

"Tenken" stickers are placed on vehicles that have passed the shaken inspection, and serve as proof that the vehicle has been approved by the government. The stickers display a unique number assigned to the vehicle, as well as the date of the inspection.
